EH I Si W S "5 A sua t UJ a, sg L08T IN THE WOODS. Practical Advice from a World Fa mous Traveler. Every summer brings tragic tales of campers, hunters nnd summer tour ists who are lost In the woods. A considerable number are never found. Others go Insano from terror, hunger or cold. Even in the more fortunnto cases the persons who are lost undergo Intense nervous strain. George Ken nan, the great traveller, gives some practical advice on this subject In a recent number of the Otulook. When you discover that you have lost your wuy sit down instantly. You have probably strayed but a short dlstanco from the trail, because otherwiso the branches of undergrowth would sooner have attracted your attention. Then with all your strength of will remind youisclf tlmt If you allow ydurself to become paulc-strlckcn and rush off nlmlessly, you will only get deeper and deeper Into the woods. In the thous-nnd-squnre-inlle forest tracts of Mich Iguu or the Adlrotulncks or Mnltic you might never be henrd of ngnln. Tho first act Is to break tho top. of' a hush and bend It over. Tho un'dcr side of the leaves shows such differ ent tints from tho upper as to bo quickly noticeable. . To this first hush tie your handkerchief for a bnse. Wnllc slowly away, breaking and bending over bush lops every ten or twelvo feet for a trail, and never lose sight of your handkerchief.' After a while re turn to your bnse nnd try another direc tion, always leaving n trail of bent bushes behind you. Shout whenever you return to your bnse. In this manner one can usually find his way to the beaten path In n few minutes, or bo found by search-parties. Even children can and should bo taught this simple lesion before they are allowed ne:ir largo tracts of forest. ' Persons going deliberately Into tho woodB to fish or hunt should always wear a small compaas suspended by a chain nbout the neck. In a pocket It Is subject to too many clmtictM of loss. If to tho compass bo added a tiny chamois bag containing a tightly cork ed bottlo of matches, twenty feet of slllc.cord, n fish-hook and n few tnblets of compressed food, tho tourist's llfu Is practically safe even though ho Is lost for days. MM W warn lr Whllo one's advertising ought to bu considered In the nature of a continued story, each advertisement ought to bo completo In Itself. Tho crying wenluiess of modern ad vertising, says Joel Benton, Is lis puerility In name-making. Ho wants mi "advertising philologist" or "ar biter of nomenclature." Tho citizens of Los Angeles, Cal., have expended nearly $:i.r0,000 within tho past ten years-In advertising, ex hibitions, etc., for the purpose of at tracting settlers and otherwise adver tising their city. It might he pertinent to add that Los Angeles showed tho I largest percentage of gain In popula tion uuring moso ten years or any city hi America. Hundreds of novel advertising schemes that are hatched every day uro so evenly merltlcss that It Is almost safu to apply Punch's advice to all of them, "Don't!" Komo one tries them all, however, and vast sums of money are sunk In them, Thero nro doubtless cases where they pay, but It would not bo hard to show that legitlmato adver tising would have paid better. The great public holds Its open court dally In tho newspaper and will hear what any man has to say In bohalf of his business ptovldcd ho can say it well. Primers' Ink. Tho Philadelphia Kccoid tells an In foresting story about tho success of tho largest general store In Tacoma, Wash. Tho proptlctors begun business In n small way, lived economically and saved every dollar to buy space In tho newspapers. Now their advertising coutracts rail for an aggregate space of 107 pages a year. The inauuger of tho concern Miys they would as soon think of going out of business as of re ducing thelr'advertlslng space, The, ex periment of that firm s tho common experlenco of all extensive advertisers. A man might ns well tnko down his business signs as to stop advertising, as might a dim. Stopped for Once. A cltlzeu from the frontier, who nev er had been In Washington before, was visiting a friend In the nation's capi tal, and was taken one day to tho gal lery of the Senate willo an Important measure was under discussion. A senator was dellvcrlug a long, prosy and apparently aimless speech, ana tho visitor soon grew tired of It. "Why doesn't ho say somothln' worth listening to?" ho whispered to his friend. "Ob, he's merely talking against time." "What's tho good of that?" asked tho other, aghast. "Time goes on Just tho same, doesn't It?" "I suppose It does," replied his friend, looking at his watch and yawn ing; "but It floesn't seem to." A man can't bo' said to be thoroughly domestic In bis tastes unless ha can get an article out of tho refrigerator without spilling something, . MONTIM SDVERTISEMEHTS.
